Community Profile | District of Saanich
The District of Saanich, on the Southern tip of Vancouver Island, is one of 13 municipalities in the Capital Regional District.
Saanich adopted a Climate Action Plan in 2010 to reduce community and municipal greenhouse gas emissions. The next step was a Climate Change Adaptation Plan to prepare the community and municipal operations for anticipated climate change impacts.
Consultants for the District worked with the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium (PCIC) to analyze regional climate change scenarios. They also prepared a preliminary vulnerability and risk assessment, drawing on the protocol in Preparing for Climate Change: A Guidebook for Local, Regional and State Governments.
A climate change adaptation plan was completed and adopted by the District of Saanich Council in 2011. The plan addresses impacts in 10 key sectors including: ecosystems and urban forests; infrastructure; transportation and mobility; buildings; agriculture and food security; energy supply; economic development; health; land-use; and emergency response. It also lists actions that residents, businesses and municipal operations can take to prepare for and adapt to these impacts.
